Mount Juliet was settled in 1835 and incoprated as a city in 1972. It is name after the Mount Juliet Estate in County Kilkenny, Ireland.

The city has a total area of 16.6 square miles. It is located between Old Hickory Lake to the north and Percy Priest Lake to the south. Both are man-made bodies of water.
